The first College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tueday evening, stirring up even more controversy than they have in the three previous years that the playoff has existed.

Shockingly, Alabama is ranked in the number two spot, behind bitter rival Georgia, despite almost universally being considered the favorite to win the championship this year, The playoff committee’s reasoning was that the Bulldogs had beat two top-25 opponents (including No. 4 Notre Dame) so far this year, giving them a better strength of record than the Crimson Tide, whose competition this season has mostly been G-5 or FCS teams or pitifully underperforming SEC opponents.

Clemson’s top-four ranking has also been met with some jeers, mainly because the Tigers lost to Syracuse, a mediocre team who was also beaten by No. 10 Miami this season. This has led to criticisms of the committee’s reasoning. A

Another ranking bothering a lot of people is Ohio State being placed at No. 6. With a win last week over then-No. 2-ranked Penn State and their only loss coming against a top 5-ranked Oklahoma team, many have suggested that the Buckeyes are more deserving of a playoff spot than Clemson or Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish have had an excellent recovery this season after a dismal 4-8 campaign next season. They played Georgia down to the wire and have beaten several good teams so far this season, but some have accused the playoff committee of being biased toward blue-blood programs like Notre Dame and Alabama.
