In April, Dickinson Red Devils are experiencing their busiest moments of the spring semester. There are concerts almost every weekend, finals are creeping in, and it’s finally the perfect weather for sitting out on the academic quad. The Dickinson community is buzzing with commitments and excitement, but few are as involved as the current in-season spring athletes.
Following success in their fall seasons, both the men’s and women’s golf teams are in full swing. So far this spring, the men’s team has played three matches. Their season opener, the Dickinson Spring Invitational, was played in two rounds on Sunday, March 22 and Monday, March 23.
The “A” team placed second in round one and climbed to secure the first-place spot in the final round. The men then traveled to Chester County, PA, to compete in the Swarthmore Invitational on March 29th and 30th.
They finished first overall with the help of Colin McMahon-Shea ‘26. He ended the match three under par, is currently ranked 18th in the nation, and recently won the Centennial Conference Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week. At the team’s latest match at the Elizabeth College Invitational, they finished second out of twelve teams.
So far, the women’s golf team is 1-2. Although they lost their first match against Gettysburg College on March 21st, they weren’t discouraged in future matches. At the McDaniel Spring Invitational, they finished seventh in the first round on March 28th. The next day, they fell off a little bit but still managed to secure eighth place out of eleven teams. They still have opportunities, such as the Dickinson Tri-Match, to work out any kinks before the Centennial Conference Championships on April 25th and 26th.
In addition to golf, the Red Devils tennis teams are in the midst of the action. The men’s team is currently 2-11, with a win percentage of around 15%. Despite their setbacks, the men defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 4-3 during their spring break trip to Orlando, Florida. Their other win was during the fall season, where they beat Messiah University 6-1 on September 20th.
The women’s tennis team has played twelve matches so far this season and has won eight of them. On their spring break trip, which was also in Orlando, Florida, the women went 2-2. After returning to Pennsylvania, they are on a winning streak. Since being back, they have won two matches. One was against Goucher College with a score of 7-0, and the most recent was a heated battle against Washington College, where the Red Devils came out on top 4-3.
Softball and baseball are also in the middle of their seasons. Following a disastrous spring break trip to Hawaii, the softball team has an overall record of 6-10. They started strong with two wins against Hood College in a February doubleheader. However, their next four games resulted in losses. Granted, they were playing highly competitive teams from California on their trip. Once back on the continental US, they have split every double header series with one win and one loss, with the exception of their two losses against Muhlenberg College.
Baseball has arguably seen more luck, currently boasting a record of 15-8. They played seven games in February, winning four of them. During their spring break trip to Florida, the men went 6-2. Back home, they’ve continued to battle local teams like Juniata and Swarthmore. Both softball and baseball are ranked sixth in the Centennial Conference.
Track and field is currently cruising at their own speed and absolutely dominating their competition. The men have placed first overall in both invites they attended. Oliver Stroka ‘28 was named Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week two consecutive weeks in March for his throwing performances. The women’s team has shown strong competition at their meets, placing third at the Little Three Meet and eighth at the York Midweek Invite.
Although all Dickinson athletics are noteworthy, few have had as much attention as lacrosse has. The women’s lacrosse team is currently 6-5, and just recently secured their first CC win against McDaniel College. However, they aren’t the team everyone’s watching.
Men’s lacrosse, last year’s NCAA Division III runner-ups, have all eyes on them. The team is 8-2, and following last year’s historic run, many are wondering how far they’ll make it in this year’s championship bracket. The Red Devils are currently ranked third in the CC and 13th or 14th nationally. With players like Hayden Warren ‘27, who just received the CC Defensive Player of the Week honor, the men have the potential to make a run in the tournament.
Regardless of the sport, it’s undeniable that Dickinson’s talent is on full display through Red Devil athletics. As teams continue their regular season play and advance towards conference championships, Dickinsonians will be cheering them on.
