RidePost Cruises into Dickinson’s Campus

Need a ride? If so, a new online campus initiative, RidePost, will help you find one.

The Dickinson RidePost board was started last week thanks to funding by the Center for Sustainability Education, Division of Student Development and Student Senate. RidePost is a ridesharing website that is exclusive to members of the Dickinson community. Students, faculty, and staff who are traveling by car can post details about their trip to the RidePost website, including their destination, the number of additional passengers they can accommodate, and the price (if any) they are charging for passengers. Users can also post to join someone else’s ride.

RidePost goes beyond simple carpooling by allowing users to personalize their profiles with information such as what kind of music they like on car rides, link to Facebook or LinkedIn, sync routes with Google Maps, and even split gas payments pre-trip by connecting to your bank account.

Additionally, users can review other users after their rides, which lends itself to a major component of RidePost – safety.

Because it is only open to the Dickinson community, users can feel secure in giving and taking rides. Tyce Herrman, Project Coordinator for CSE, thinks that RidePost is safer than other ridesharing websites because “you’re going to class with or working with the people you’re sharing rides with.”

Many other schools have adopted similar programs. Herrman believes this is because it is a cheap, sustainable alternative to making individual car trips when traveling for breaks or leisure. So far, RidePost has received a positive response.

“I’ve personally heard exclusively positive feedback. Those who are initially wary always warm up to the idea as each of their concerns is addressed,” said Herrman. “Those without cars, international students and first year students, seem to be the most excited for more transportation options through ridesharing, but employees who are commuting, 10, 15, 20 or more miles and feeling the pinch at the pump are also excited to cut their expenses.”

To register for RidePost, visit dickinson.ridepost.com and create an account with your Dickinson email. With Fall Pause quickly approaching, Herrman expects RidePost to receive a lot of traffic – so climb aboard!
