Silence of the Library Makes Me Want to Go Silence of the Lambs

Dickinson students boycotted the Waidner-Spahr library because the quiet section was too quiet on Wednesday Oct. 14.

“I just couldn’t concentrate it was so quiet I was distracted” said Dumbo Hushy ’18. “It just isn’t natural to be so silent all the time.”

20 students stood outside the library on Wednesday evening and held a candle light vigil, silently protesting the quiet section of the library.

“We believe that silent and peaceful action will send a stronger message to the administration than loud, boisterous protests,” said Ironyl Peaces ’16. “We will sit out here, keeping a silent vigil, as long as it takes for the administration to understand that we are serious.”

The administration refused to comment on the vigil and the office of the President said “no comment.”

“This is not the first time we have been stonewalled by the administration. They are not present in the community,” commented Peaces on the administration’s refusal to comment.

Other vigil holders had various reasons as to why they were protesting the enforcement of silence in the quiet section.

“When I want to eat a bag of chips, I distract and annoy everyone including myself. I can hear each crunch of the chip as I bite into it. If it weren’t so quiet my chip eating wouldn’t bother anyone,” said Pommes Frites ’19.

Another first-year, Carrot Top ’19, agreed with Frites

“I like carrots, they help me study, but I can’t eat my carrots in the quiet section because when I do I get the nastiest glares from those around me,” explained Top. “If only the school offered noise canceling headphones so we didn’t have to be quiet.”

“Not only is it too quiet it’s also way too cold. There is nowhere else on the entire campus colder than the quiet section. I have to bring a blanket with me in August if I want to study there,” said Shivery Timbers ’17.

Other vigil holders commented that they don’t want to study anywhere else because the quiet section has the best seating, but it is just too quiet.

The vigil ended Thursday evening, 24 hours after its beginning. The vigil holders boycott continues; however, the quiet section is now quieter than ever.
