Volleyball Narrowly Edged By Mules

The Dickinson volleyball team lost an extremely competitive five-set match to Muhlenberg on Saturday, Sept. 28. Trailing 2-1 entering the fourth set, Dickinson held off defeat by winning 25-22 before losing the fifth set 15-12. The loss drops the Red Devils to 0-3 in the conference and 5-9 overall. The win improves Muhlenberg to 8-5

Dickinson won the first set 25-16 with the help of six kills from JoAnna DeCastro ’14. The Mules took the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-22, respectively, before the exciting fourth and fifth sets. DeCastro led the team with 18 kills and has high hopes for the upcoming games. “Our game against Muhlenberg was an excellent match up. They were the exact “mirror” of our team and how we play,” she said. “It was a tough loss in the end after taking it all the way to five games, but the team rallied and overall came out really strong and excited. We did have some serve-receive problems at a few points in some of the games, but we were almost always able to come from behind and get back in the lead or at least tie it up again.”

Laura Silverman ’16 also recorded 11 kills and four block assists. Emily Smith ’16 and Lauren Ahern ’17 also added nine kills for the Red Devils.

Jenn Morrissey ’16 came up with another 47 assists for Dickinson. This puts Morrissey over 900 for her career. “Right now the team is really coming together and it shows! Our defense has really stepped up and been giving great passes to set up the hitters and the hitters have been doing their job. My success is due to their success,” said Morrissey.

The team is looking to continue to improve and hopes to see the results reflect that.“I am very proud of all of the hard work and a lot of people were able to see that,” said De Castro. “So far the season is still progressing, we have some stuff to work on this week at practice in preparation for the York tournament this coming weekend, but we’re all ready to come home with some W’s this coming Saturday.”

The volleyball team travels to McDaniel College on Wednesday, Oct. 2, for a game set to start at 7 p.m. Following this conference matchup, the Red Devils will compete in the York College Tri-Match on Saturday, Oct. 5, where they will play three games, two against Southern Virginia and one against York.
