Men’s Soccer Defeats Defending Champs

The Red Devils are once again in the limelight as Christopher Schultz ’14 was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He was recognized for his efforts in the challenging match against McDaniel on Wednesday, Oct. 2 that went into double overtime.

Schultz’s efforts helped maintain the scoreless draw against McDaniel and contributed to Dickinson’s 3-1 victory over Haverford on Saturday, Oct. 5. With the 1-0-1 week, they improve to 8-2-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference. They also move up from #13 to #12 in the d3soccer.com national poll.

Against the Fords, Dickinson’s Jamie Martin ’14 headed the ball into the net almost immediately after the start of the game. He managed to direct the lofted ball from Isaac Pitkow ’16 over Haverford’s goaltender. The early goal fueled the already highly-motivated Red Devils, who were looking to defeat the defending conference champions. The play on the field was fairly even as both Dickinson and Haverford attempted 10 shots on goal.

Going into halftime, the score was tied at 1-1 after a ‘Fords player found the net in the thiry-first minute. Braeden Kelly ’16 was quick to retaliate in the second half. He scored an unassisted goal to put the Red Devils back on the board and in the lead. Danny Sheppard ’17 tallied the final goal in the last two minutes to secure both the lead and win.

Stand-out defenders included Schultz as well as goalie Jeremy Palcan ’17, who stopped five attempted goals. He also goaltended in the second half and double overtime periods of the McDaniel match.

The Green Terror played an aggressive game and came on strong in the opening. Reed Milbrath ’15 made five saves to hinder McDaniel’s momentum in the first half. The play was consistently back-and-forth, yet, Dickinson seemed to dig a bit deeper in overtime. Although the Red Devils were unable to tally a shot, they were able to keep the Green Terror off the scoreboard despite their 19-11 shot advantage and 10-2 corner kick advantage.

Dickinson will face conference opponent Gettysburg College at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 12, at Miller Field. They currently rank second behind Swarthmore in the CC standings.
