XC Holds Own Against Division I Competition

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams traveled to Lehigh University to compete in the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5. The women placed fourth in the Women’s Collegiate Brown Race. The men, ranked eighth nationally amongst Division III teams, placed twenty-seventh in the DI-DII-DIII Combined Race; however, the men were only beat by one other DIII school, Williams College.

The men had a very impressive performance this past Saturday. Nick Stender ’15 came in ninety-second place with a time of 25:21. Ryan Steinbock ’14 came in one hundred fifteenth place with a score of 25:32. Also finishing in the top two-hundred were Alex Strenta ’14 and Greg Clark ’14. The Red Devils placed twenty-seventh out of forty-seven teams. Division I Indiana University won the event.

The women also came out strong at the Paul Short Invitational. Sarah Rutkowski ’15 finished first amongst the Red Devils and came in thirty-ninth place with a time of 22:45. Mackenzie Shelgren ’16 and Emily Miller ’14 finished shortly after with times of 22:52 and 22:53. Polly Terzian ’17, Rebecca Race ’16, and Mary Thorne ’15, all finished seconds after each other landing them spots in the top one-hundred. The Red Devils finished just behind Holy Cross, Shippensburg University, and Haverford College. The women fought hard and ended up in fourth place out of all forty-five teams.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams have an extra week to prepare for the Gettysburg Invitation on Saturday, Oct. 19. The teams will be traveling to Gettysburg College with the hopes of bringing home first place. The race will begin at 11 AM.

This is their last meet before the Conference Championships on Nov. 2. Last season, the men placed second the the Conference Championships. The women placed fourth.
