Volleyball Beat By Bullets, Sunk By Shoremen

The Dickinson College volleyball team had another tough Centennial Conference matchup against Gettysburg on Oct. 10, losing 3-1. The team then suffered a loss on the road competing against Washington College on Oct. 12, falling 3-2.

Against Gettysburg, the Red Devils played a tight first set finishing with a 25-20 loss. In the second set, they rallied for a 25-20 win. Laura Silverman ’16 added six kills. Although it was a very tight third set, the Bullets came ahead 26-24 in the end despite Silverman’s seven kills. After being tied 24-24 and forcing overtime, the Bullets finished with a 27-25 win in the fourth to improve 4-1 in Centennial Conference play. Emily Smith ’16 also added 12 kills while Lauren Ahern ’17 came up with 11 kills. Jenn Morrissey ’16 and Avery Dravis Stark ’17 added 22 and 20 assists respectively.

Dickinson won the first set against the Shorewomen, 25-22, before falling 25-15 in the second set. The team answered with a win in the third set, 25-22, before the Shorewomen rallied the fourth set with a 25-20 win over the Red Devils. Washington sealed the win in the fifth set with a 15-10 win. Smith came up with a big performance for the Red Devils with 23 kills and eight digs while Silverman added 17 kills on the day. Joanna De Castro ’13 recorded 23 digs and Grace Morgan ’13 added 22 digs. Morrissey and Stark combined 48 assists despite the loss to the Shorewomen.

The Red Devils are currently 5-14 overall and 0-6 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson will be traveling to Ursinus College on Saturday, Oct. 19, for another Centennial Conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.

Devils answered just 1:07 later using a penalty corner of their own to net the fourth goal of the game. Kendall Packo’17 was able to carry the ball around the top of the circle and found Groves on the inside. Groves’ shot was saved, but first-year Erica Marshall was there to put the rebound in the back of the cage for a 4-1 lead. In the 59th minute, Natalie Polk ‘15 would connect with Tara Black ‘16 to cap off the scoring for the game. Washington was able to find the back of the cage with 1:42 remaining for a final score of 5-2. Perlmutter finished the game with a goal and an assist while Groves tallied a pair of assists on the day. Schlechtweg made five saves in the nets.

The Devils improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference.
