Volleyball Wraps Up Tough Season

The volleyball team concluded their season with a loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Blue Jays swept the three sets, winning 25-19, 25-15, 25-10.

Emily Smith ’16 and Laura Silverman ’16 each added five kills. Silverman also recorded four digs and a block. Jenn Morrissey ’16 handed out seven assists while Avery Dravis Stark ’17 added nine assists as well. Together Grace Morgan ’13 and Joanna DeCastro ’13 tallied 11 digs.

The Red Devils finished their season 6-17 overall and 1-9 in the Centennial Conference. The team came in tenth place, finishing ahead of Ursinus. Prior to their last game, the team honored their four seniors. These seniors, Emily Kisak ’14, Jessie Shaffner ’14, Joanna DeCastro ’14, and Grace Morgan ’14, summarized their experiences over the last four years:

Kisak: “I’d say that the past four years have been absolutely fantastic, I’ve played in some great games and met a wonderful group of ladies along the way. It’s really just made my college experience special.”

Shaffner: “After four years on the DCVB team I cannot believe it is finally over with. We have dealt with a lot of ups and downs throughout the seasons but I think in the end it worked out great. I have a family I will always turn to. This past season specifically has been tough with some new transitions, but it was a building year. There is only up from here. I am excited to come back as an alum and see all the progress that will be made in the coming years to the program!”

DeCastro: “I still can’t believe my four years playing for the Dickinson Women’s Volleyball team has come to a close. Each season has been an adventure and I wouldn’t give them up for the world nor change one thing about them. I have definitely been through a lot of up’s and down’s during my time with the team, but playing in college and with these girls has taught me so much. On the court and off of the court I have become competitive, strategic, challenged… Name any adjective and I’ve probably felt it during these past four years. But one thing this group of girls and support system has taught me is to never give up and that you will always find family in the things you love in life. Volleyball has made me who I am today and my DCVB family will always have a special place in my heart. I have them to thank for giving me four years of everything I could have asked for and more.”

Morgan: “The Dickinson College Volleyball team is more than just a team. DCVB is a family and a support system. The team has been such an integral part of my experience at Dickinson and I couldn’t imagine my four years here without it. Playing competitive college volleyball has taught me more than I ever could have imagined about myself and about the meaning of teamwork. It’s a bittersweet feeling ending your senior season, but looking back, I know I wouldn’t have traded those 4 years of hard work for anything.”
