Red Devils Fall to Blue Jays in Season Road Opener

The Dickinson Men’s Lacrosse program opened their 2015 campaign this past Wednesday, February 18 with a clash against the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College. A day that began with hope and promise for this Red Devils squad ended on a less positive note, as Dickinson fell 8-6 on the road.

With 9:57 left in the first quarter, the home team opened the scoring, but Dickinson was able to answer just three minutes later as senior midfielder Colin Farrell equalized for the Red Devils’ first goal of the season. The Blue Jays, however, would score again to take a 2-1 lead into the second frame.

Early in the second quarter, Elizabethtown would stretch their lead to 3, scoring two quick goals. With 3 minutes left before the half, Dickinson made a push, as captain Brett Parker ’15 found junior Chris Menard who capitalized to take the deficit to 4-2.

Junior face off specialist Greg Castro won the following faceoff, gaining possession for the Red Devils, but the visitors were unable to turn the possession into a goal.
Dickinson played tough defense for the rest of the half, forcing two turnovers in the last two minutes of the half, but couldn’t cut into the Blue Jays’ lead, as E-Town lead 4-2 at half.

Dickinson had a man-up advantage heading into the third quarter thanks to a late penalty call, and the Red Devils made it count. Rob Kendall ’16 found Menard who turned home his second goal of the night not 30 seconds into the second half.

The defense continued their strong play into the second half, forcing another turnover off the Blue Jays. Kendall found Tyler Llewellyn ‘17 who scored the equalizer to put tie the game at 4-4.

The home team wouldn’t allow the persistent Red Devil’s momentum to continue, however, as they ran off three goals to push the lead back up to 3 with 7:00 minutes to play in regulation.

Dickinson would make one final push beginning with a goal for Kendall off a feed from Parker. Menard completed his hat trick at the 3:59 mark to cut the defecit to 7-6.
E-town scored the dagger after two Dickinson penalties with 2:00 minutes to play, holding off for the 8-6 victory.

Dickinson was lead by Menard with a hat trick on the night. Kendall also posted a strong effort with a goal to go along with a pair of assists.

Lax takes the field again on Wednesday, February 25 at Biddle Field at 3:30 for a game against St. Mary’s College. They will then travel to Montclair St. on Saturday, February 28 to face the #16 ranked Red Hawks.

The men’s lacrosse team open their Centennial Conference run on March 25 at McDaniel College.
