Women’s Squash 2-1 at Nationals
The No. 17-ranked Dickinson women’s squash team competed at the 2018 College Squash Association Team Championships last weekend at Harvard University. They topped No. 24-ranked Colby College, 6-3, in the first round on Friday Feb. 16 and No. 21-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday, Feb. 17, before falling to No. 19-ranked Bates College, 7-2, on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Colby took an early 1-0 lead as Devin Mullaney edged out Hedvika Suchankova ’19 in five closely-fought sets. Dickinson battle back to a 2-1 lead thanks to wins in the second and third flights Domenica Romo ’19 (2-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8) and Eloise Nimoityn ’21 (9-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7).
Colby retook the lead after wins in the fourth and fifth flights but the Red Devils came back with wins in the final four flights to win the match, with Stuart Lemay ’18 (6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 12-10), Jaime Leigh Edghill ’20 (11-4, 11-9, 11-5) and Carley Barton ’21 (11-6, 11-4, 13-11) and Abbie Wingerd ’20 (11-1, 11-4, 11-2) all notching wins.
Dickinson had to play from behind early again versus Wesleyan, as Suchankova fell in three sets in the first flight. Romo and Nimoityn won sets two and three, respectively. Wesleyan’s Josephine Russ broke up the run with a win in the fourth flight over Nicole DeLuca ’19 before the Red Devils stormed back to win each of the remaining flights for the 7-2 victory as Aya Sobhy ’21, Lemay, Edghill, Barton and Wingerd all claiming wins on the way.
The Red Devils finish the season with an overall record of 10-9 as they prepare to head to the CSA Individual Championships, set to begin on Mar. 4.
